    The City has lost power to the Western Avenue and Delnor substations after another round of severe weather rolled through Kane County July 15.

    ComEd's feeder lines that run to the City's substations dropped service around 9 p.m. While the City of Geneva owns and operates its own electric utility, ComEd power lines feed the City’s substations. Geneva interconnects with ComEd to allow the City to receive energy purchased from its regional service transmission provider, PJM.

    The City's Public Works Department is responding to the outage, but there was no ETA on restoration. Updates will be provided when more information is made available.

    As a reminder, the City's social media channels and online request tracker are not monitored 24 hours a day. Residents needing after-hours assistance or reporting a power outage should call the Geneva Police Department's non-emergency phone number at 630-232-4736. Police will then dispatch the appropriate public works staff to the incident.

    People should call 911 in an emergency.

    Geneva Public Works primary goals for today have been addressing restoration and life-safety issues. The City anticipates announcing a storm cleanup plan Tuesday, July 16 once details are finalized.

    As of the afternoon, Geneva still has about 300 customers without power. Crews were able to bring Maple Lane customers back online. Unfortunately, the City had to de-energize a power line on Willow Lane for safety reasons as a cable detached from an electric pole.

    Mutual aid crews have arrived in Geneva and have begun to assist our Public Works Department with electric restoration. The July 14 storm originally knocked out 4,500 customers at its peak. The City's overhead electric lines (from Anderson Boulevard to the Fox River, north of State Street) sustained extensive storm damage. As stated in our previous update, the restoration process for the remaining customers will extend 24 to 48 hours, if not longer.

    The Geneva Township Senior Center will remain closed for the next day or two until electric service has been brought back online.

    Public Works has reopened all the roadways that were previously closed due to downed trees, electric poles and wires back open later today with the exception of Frankin Street near Fifth Street.

    While Public Works crews have been working throughout the sweltering heat during the day, more severe weather may be heading toward Kane County this evening with thunderstorms and damaging winds. Residents should pay attention to the National Weather Service and other trusted weather sources for the latest alerts.

    While no catastrophic property damage has been reported to the City from the July 14 storm, strong winds did knock down or damage more than 150 trees. Some of those trees fell into homes, fences and other buildings.

    The City's Building Division will be giving priority to property owners who sustained storm damage when reviewing building permits and conducting inspections. For residents not sure if their storm recovery efforts require a building permit, check out the City's FAQ document or call the Building Division at 630-262-0280.

    The Geneva Public Works Department has been working around the clock to restore power to customers who lost service July 14 due to a strong storm that swept through Kane County.

    More than 300 customers in the Anderson Boulevard area remain without service along with other smaller pockets as of July 15. Due to the severity of the storm, electric poles were snapped in some areas bringing down power lines. The repair process is tedious in nature and could extend 24 to 48 hours, if not longer. Geneva Public Works has requested mutual aid from Rantoul and Princeton to assist bringing customers back online.

    With the heat index expected to reach 105 this afternoon, the City has activated its cooling centers for people who need a break from the heat. The cooling centers do not have any overnight accommodations.

    The Geneva Township Senior Center at Wheeler Park and Harrison Street School are without power.

    Geneva Public Works also is addressing smaller outages that occurred from tree branches falling into power lines. The City estimates the storm knocked down between 60 to 100 parkway and private trees overnight.

    Public Works goal this morning is to reopen roadways that were shut down by fallen trees, electric poles and power lines, including:

    • Maple Lane;
    • West Lane;
    • Center Street from Highbury Lane and West Lane;
    • Paddock Court;
    • Greenwich Lane;
    • Franklin Street at Fifth Street;
    • Manchester Course;
    • Britta Lane;
    • The alley behind Richards Street.

    Other areas throughout Geneva may have smaller branches and debris in the roadway. Motorists are asked to use caution when driving.

    The City will provide additional updates later today.
